History
This beautiful Art Nouveau building on Baznīcas Street, adorned with stained glass windows, was designed by architect Friedrich Scheffel.
Friedrich Scheffel was one of the most prominent 19th-century architects of Baltic German origin in Riga. He primarily designed Art Nouveau buildings and oversaw the construction of more than 35 residential and public structures during his lifetime, leaving a significant mark on the city’s historic architecture. He is the author of many notable Art Nouveau buildings, including the famous “Cat House” in Old Riga, the residential building at Alberta Street 1 in the Quiet Centre, and many other remarkable landmarks throughout the capital.
Scheffel’s designs were characterized by asymmetrical facades, thoughtful layouts, and functionality. Moreover, his buildings were never stylistically identical, making each project a unique Art Nouveau gem. One such gem is the apartment building at 5 Baznīcas Street, completed in 1908. The “Scheffel Building” has proudly and gracefully adorned the city for over a century—now revived in a new light for the present day.
